Paving the Way for Brain Injury Treatment and Awareness

Ayla’s journey is nothing short of extraordinary. Born with a catastrophic brain injury that led to stage 5 quadriplegia cerebral palsy, she has become a beacon of hope and resilience, not only for her family but for the countless others facing similar challenges.

Ayla’s path to healing has involved cutting-edge treatments and therapies that are paving the way for how we approach brain injury and recovery. From the stem cell transplant she received at Duke University, which opened new possibilities for healing and regeneration, to the SPML alcohol nerve block that helped manage pain and spasticity, Ayla’s story is one of innovation and determination.

SPML stands for Selective Percutaneous Myofascial Lengthening. It is a minimally invasive surgical procedure commonly used to treat muscle contractures in children with conditions like cerebral palsy. Muscle contractures occur when muscles become tight and limit the range of motion in the joints.

In 2024, Ayla traveled to Bengaluru, India, two times for treatments with Cytotron, a groundbreaking therapy currently in clinical trials that holds the potential to transform the future of brain injury care. Her last cycle is in May 2025. This treatment focuses on promoting brain regeneration and improving cognitive and motor function, offering new hope to families affected by brain injuries.

Closer to home, Ayla has also benefited from therapies like Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), which improves brain function and reduces inflammation, and We Flow Therapy, which targets the fascia to promote healing and reduce pain. Through intensive therapies at SMILE, Ayla has made significant progress, showing the power of specialized care in helping children with neurological conditions thrive.

Ayla’s journey is not just a story of personal triumph; it’s a message to the world that brain injury treatment is evolving. Through these therapies, Ayla is not only improving her own life but also helping to illuminate a path for others who face similar struggles. Her strength, resilience, and unwavering spirit are transforming how we look at brain injuries—turning what was once thought to be an unchangeable fate into a future filled with hope, possibility, and progress.
